About Our Community Center
Darul Kheir is a registered Community Based Organization founded in 2016. ‘Darul’ and ‘Kheir’ are Arabic words that can be translated to mean ‘The Home Of Good Fortune.’ The organization places a strong focus on religious relevance and programmatic sustainability. Our mission is informed by the desire to better manage the nexus between sustainable development and urbanization challenges in the informal settlements where we dispense our practices. Darul Kheir's central priorities are promoting formal education and actualizing ideal living standards in informal settlements.
Darul Kheir has over the years implemented a vast spectrum of activities aimed at improving the living standards of children, youths and women living in the Mukuru slums. These activities include; Madrassa program, Orphans and other vulnerable children programs, vocational training programs such as tailoring and youth skills development and mentorship, enterprise development trainings and food program.
Darul Kheir was established by the need for a comprehensive community-based program to care for children, youth, women, and their families. It promotes equitable community development and women’s literacy, strengthening peace and solidarity in Urban Informal Settlement Areas. Darul Kheir was also motivated to build a robust Islamic education system within the Muslim community living in the Mukuru Slums. The organization also aspires to address the needs of women in poverty, HIV/AIDS, and gender-based violence.
Why Darul Kheir Organization Exists
Over the years, Darul Kheir Organization has implemented many activities to improve the living standards of children, youths, and women living in the Mukuru slums. These activities include the Madrassa program, Orphans and other vulnerable children programs, vocational training programs such as tailoring and youth skills development and mentorship, enterprise development training, and food programs. Darul Kheir is grounded on a Madrassa Program in Fuata Nyayo in Mukuru Slums. Watch the video below to learn more about our organization.
Darul Kheir Community Center has initiated a comprehensive strategy that integrates Islamic education with the formal education offered for free by the government of Kenya and other Catholic Organizations. That notwithstanding, Darul Khier saw the need to introduce Islamic Education for free to balance the impact of education system for the Muslim children and the larger community living in Mukuru. Darul Kheir is governed by a six-member board of directors, including representatives from different target groups (such as women and youths), Muslim leaders, local community leaders, and administrators. This team oversees the management and administration of the Madrassa and all other programs under the DK umbrella.
The program implementation team is led by the Program Director, whom the Program Coordinator, Program Assistant, and specialized Project Volunteers assist. At the same time, the Darul Kheir community center and organization-based project activities are planned and implemented by community-based volunteers and community members, who also form the organization’s general assembly. In addition to the local program team and community-based volunteers, Darul Kheir also leverages the efforts of external sponsors who assist in building the capacity of local volunteers and support the organization in resource mobilization.

Our Child Rights Initiative is a program that ensures every child within our community can enjoy their rights as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This includes the right to survival, development, protection, and participation.
Education Funding
We established this Education Empowerment Program to recognize the pressing need to address our students' financial barriers in their education. The program aims to ensure that these students do not face obstacles in joining school due to the lack of school fees.
Livelihoods Support
This program aims to tap into the untapped potential of our youth, who often remain underutilized in the job market. We aim to uplift these individuals, providing them with the necessary skills and qualifications to become integral to our nation's growth story.
Gender Empowerment
We are at the forefront of advocating for gender-centric policies and initiatives that resonate with the needs of vulnerable women, girls, and boys in the informal settlements. Our course aims to amplify their voices, strengthen their capacities, and create a ripple effect of positive change within our working zone.
Climate Advocacy
Climate change and environmental sustainability are some of the aspects deemed to be very critical in our course of advancing our mission at the community level. We advocate for such a crucial undertaking through "Urban GreenWave,"- a pioneering climate change advocacy program by Darul Kheir.
Disaster Management
This is a comprehensive data-based Disaster Response and Crisis Management Program that aims to mitigate the adverse effects of these disasters by implementing proactive measures, such as community education and awareness campaigns, early warning systems, and emergency preparedness training.
