Explore How Our Community Center Helps Foster Change
We are a registered community-based organization center with the ultimate goal of helping cater to the persons living in Mukuru Slums.
Through the Child Rights Initiative, we aim to create a community where every child is valued, protected, and empowered. We believe that when we uphold the rights of children, we create a brighter future for everyone.
Children Rights Program
Our Child Rights Initiative is a comprehensive program that ensures every child within our community can enjoy their rights as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This includes the right to survival, development, protection, and participation. The program involves a range of activities, including:
Awareness Campaigns
We organize campaigns to raise awareness about child rights among children, parents, and the wider community. These campaigns aim to educate individuals about the importance of respecting and upholding child rights.
Support Services
We provide support services for children who have been victims of rights violations. This includes counseling, legal aid, and rehabilitation services.
Advocacy Work
We work with local authorities and other stakeholders to advocate for policies and practices that protect and promote child rights.
Education Programs
We believe that education is a fundamental right of every child. Our education programs aim to ensure that every child in our community can access quality education.
Education Empowerment Program
Darul's Education Empowerment Program in the Informal Settlements has provided essential support for the past seven years. We established this program to recognize the pressing need to address the financial barriers faced by our students in their education. It aims to ensure that these students do not face obstacles in joining school due to the lack of school fees. We are currently running 3 initiatives under this program, namely:
Economic Livelihoods Support
At Darul Kheir, we are excited to introduce our new Livelihood Program. This initiative is designed to empower the unemployed or underemployed youth from disadvantaged groups within the different Urban Informal settlements, connecting them with sectors that have significant growth potential in terms of revenue generation and employability.
Our Livelihood Program aims to tap into the untapped potential of our youth, who often remain underutilized in the job market due to a lack of requisite qualifications and training. We aim to uplift these individuals, providing them with the necessary skills and qualifications to become an integral part of our nation's growth story.
Through this Livelihood Program, we aspire to positively impact the overall well-being of our community, improving their livelihoods and contributing to nation-building. We look forward to working with our community and partners- to make this program successful.
Economic Livelihoods Support
Darul Kheir is at the forefront in advocating for Gender-centric policies and initiatives that resonate with the needs of vulnerable women, girls, and boys in the informal settlements. Our course aims to amplify their voices, strengthen their capacities, and create a ripple effect of positive change within the communities that we serve.
Advocacy & Awareness
We work to raise awareness about gender equality and advocate for the rights of women and children. We organize community outreach programs, campaigns, and workshops to educate the community about the importance of gender equality.
Formal Education
We believe that education is the cornerstone of empowerment. We provide access to quality education, ensuring that every child, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to learn and grow.
Skills Development
We offer vocational training and life skills workshops to equip individuals with the tools they need to secure a sustainable livelihood. This includes training in entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and financial management.
Through this approach, we aim to create a society where everyone, regardless of their gender, has the opportunity to thrive. We believe that when we empower one individual, we empower the entire community. And that's an echo worth amplifying.
Climate Change Advocacy
Through Urban GreenWave, we aim to create a ripple effect of positive environmental change, improving the urban climate and contributing to the overall well-being of our community. We look forward to riding this wave of change together with our community.
Climate change and environmental sustainability are some of the aspects deemed to be very critical in our course of advancing our mission at the community level. We advocate for such a crucial undertaking through "Urban GreenWave,"- a pioneering climate change advocacy program initiated by Darul Kheir. Urban GreenWave addresses the pressing climate change challenges faced in urban areas, particularly in informal settlements. It aims to create a wave of awareness, adaptation, and action towards a more sustainable future. The program focuses on three core pillars:
Awareness
We believe that understanding is the first step towards change. We provide education and awareness about the impacts of climate change, particularly in urban settings, and the importance of sustainable practices.
Adaptation
We advocate for activities that promote adaptation to climate change. This includes initiatives such as urban gardening, rainwater harvesting, and waste management, which not only help adapt to climate change but also improve the quality of life in informal settlements.
Action
We encourage community members to take action toward mitigating climate change. This involves organizing tree-planting drives, clean-up campaigns, and energy conservation initiatives.
Disaster Response & Management
Darul Kheir provides prompt and effective response to disasters, particularly fires and floods that frequently impact the vulnerable community in the Informal Settlements. With a comprehensive approach, the program aims to mitigate the adverse effects of these disasters by implementing proactive measures, such as community education and awareness campaigns, early warning systems, and emergency preparedness training.
In times of crisis, the program swiftly mobilizes a dedicated team of trained volunteers and professionals to provide immediate relief and assistance, including emergency shelter, food, clean water, medical support, and essential supplies. Through collaboration with local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and community members, the Disaster Management program strives to build resilience, enhance disaster preparedness, and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected individuals and families in the face of adversity.
