At Darul Kheir, we believe climate action starts within our communities. Our Climate Action programmes focus on practical, community-led initiatives that create cleaner, greener, healthier, and more resilient neighbourhoods. Through our work, we engage children, young people, women, and community members in taking action to protect and restore the environment while building awareness around climate change and environmental responsibility. Our Climate Action work is delivered through two key programmes:
Our Tree Planting programme promotes environmental restoration and the development of greener communities through the planting and nurturing of trees.
We mobilise community members, young people, and children to participate in tree-planting activities in schools, community spaces, and other suitable areas. Beyond simply planting trees, we encourage participants to understand the importance of caring for and growing them to maturity.
Through this programme, we aim to:
* Increase tree cover within communities.
* Promote a culture of environmental responsibility among young people.
* Create greener and healthier public spaces.
* Educate communities on the importance of trees and environmental conservation.
* Encourage long-term care and survival of planted trees.
Our Community Clean-Up programme focuses on improving sanitation and environmental conditions in underserved communities, particularly within the informal settlements of Mukuru.
We organise community clean-up activities that involve collecting waste, clearing litter, and opening up blocked drainage systems. These activities help create cleaner public spaces while addressing environmental challenges that can contribute to flooding, poor sanitation, and health risks.
In Mukuru, poor drainage and inadequate solid-waste management are recognised as important factors that increase communities’ vulnerability to flooding and other climate-related risks. ([Global Center on Adaptation][3])
Through this programme, we aim to:
